Most product conversations focus on usability. But in regulated domains — insurance, automotive, finance — the more interesting constraint is often auditability: can you reconstruct exactly why the system did what it did, six months from now?

The buffer example

We recently moved from a global 500km mileage buffer to storing the buffer per policy. On the surface, it looks like the same behavior. In practice, it means:

• Historical policies keep their original terms even if the global default changes.
• Compliance can answer "what was the buffer at time of signing?" without digging through commit history.
• Support can explain edge cases without hedging.

The takeaway

Usability gets a product adopted. Auditability keeps it trusted.
